How Many Days Until a Date? Count Down to Any Day (and Weeks)
Count the days left until an exam, wedding, trip, deadline or holiday. How to get days, weeks and hours from today, whether to include today, and quick checks.
The short answer
To find how many days until a date, open the Date Difference Calculator, set one date to today and the other to the target date. It shows the days between them, along with weeks, months, years, hours and minutes. As of 3 November 2026, for example, there are 52 days until 25 December 2026 and 59 days until 1 January 2027. The count is the number of nights or "sleeps" until the day; add 1 if you want to include both today and the target day.

Check today's date first
The End date box is filled using the current date in UTC. In India (IST is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC), that means between midnight and 5:30 am it shows yesterday's date. If you use the calculator late at night or very early in the morning, check the date and change it.

Two points to keep in mind:
- Weeks is whole weeks only. 52 days is 7 weeks and 3 days, but the box shows 7. To get the leftover days, subtract weeks x 7 from the days figure: 52 - 49 = 3.
- Months is an approximation based on an average month length, so it is rounded. For exact calendar months between two dates, such as an age or a notice period, use the Age Calculator or the method in notice period last working day.
Should you include today?
People mean slightly different things by "days until":
- Sleeps or nights until the day: use the calculator's number as it is. From 3 November to 25 December is 52 sleeps.
- Days left including today and the day itself: add 1. That gives 53.
- Full days left, not counting today or the day itself: subtract 1. That gives 51.
For countdown posts and planning, the calculator's figure (the gap between dates) is the most common meaning. For legal or official deadlines, follow the wording of the rule, which may say "within 30 days of" or "not later than". For 1 March 2027: 27 (rest of November) + 31 (December) + 31 (January) + 28 (February 2027 is not a leap year) + 1 = 118.
Remember February: it has 29 days in leap years (2028 is the next one) and 28 otherwise.
Common uses and tips
Exams and study plans
Knowing the days left helps you divide a syllabus. With 103 days until an exam and 14 chapters to revise, you have about 7 days per chapter. Leave a final week or two for revision and mock tests before dividing the rest.
Weddings and events
Event checklists often work backwards: invitations a set number of weeks before, final numbers to the caterer a week before. Use the weeks figure, then check exact dates on a calendar.
Trips and visa appointments
For travel, count the days to departure and also check the days between key dates, such as a visa appointment and the flight. Embassies and airlines state their own rules, so confirm those directly.
Work deadlines
If a deadline is about working days rather than calendar days, the calculator's Business days only option skips Saturdays and Sundays. It does not skip public holidays, so subtract any holidays that fall in the period yourself.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to update today's date. If you leave the page open overnight, the date in the box does not change. Reload or edit it.
- Mixing up date formats. 04/05 is 4 May in India and April 5 in the US. The calculator uses a date picker, so check the month name it shows.
- Treating months as exact. "About 2 months" from the Months box is fine for conversation, but use calendar dates for anything official.
- Counting the start day twice. If you count on a calendar, start from tomorrow, not today, to match the calculator.

Does the days-until count include today?
The calculator counts the gap between the two dates, which matches the number of nights or sleeps until the day. It counts neither the start day nor the end day as a full day in between. Add 1 if you want to count both today and the target day.
How many weeks until a date?
Divide the days by 7. The calculator shows whole weeks only, so 52 days shows as 7 weeks; the 3 remaining days are 52 minus 7 x 7. In words, that is 7 weeks and 3 days.
Why does the calculator show yesterday's date as today?
The end date field is filled using the date in UTC. In India that is still the previous day between midnight and 5:30 am, so check the date and correct it if needed.
