Notice Period Last Working Day: How to Calculate 30, 60 or 90 Days

Work out your last working day for a 30, 60 or 90-day notice period, whether the resignation day counts, how 3 months differs from 90 days, and how to check it.

The short answer

For a notice period stated in days, your last working day is the start date plus the notice length, minus one day if the start date itself counts as day 1. Resigning on Monday 2 November 2026 with 90 days notice gives a last day of Saturday 30 January 2027 if 2 November is day 1, or Sunday 31 January 2027 if counting starts the next day. Which applies depends on your contract. You can check any pair of dates with the Date Difference Calculator.

This guide explains general date arithmetic. Your employment contract, appointment letter and HR policy decide your actual notice terms.

The two ways of counting

Most confusion comes from a single question: is the day you resign day 1, or day 0?

MethodDay 1 isLast day for 90 days from 2 Nov 2026
Inclusive (resignation day counts)2 November 2026Saturday 30 January 2027
Next-day start3 November 2026Sunday 31 January 2027

The rule for each method:

  • Inclusive: last day = start date + (notice days − 1).
  • Next-day start: last day = start date + notice days.

Neither is "correct" in general. Some policies say the notice starts on the date the resignation is submitted, some on the date it is accepted, and some on the next working day. Check the wording in your contract, and get the date confirmed by HR in an email.

Worked examples for common notice periods

All examples start on Monday 2 November 2026.

NoticeInclusive last dayNext-day-start last day
30 daysTuesday 1 December 2026Wednesday 2 December 2026
60 daysThursday 31 December 2026Friday 1 January 2027
90 daysSaturday 30 January 2027Sunday 31 January 2027

These dates were calculated by adding days in code, not estimated. If your start date is different, use the method below to check your own.

"Three months" is not always 90 days

Many Indian employment letters say "three months' notice" rather than "90 days". Calendar months are 28 to 31 days long, so the end date can differ.

  • Three calendar months from 2 November 2026 lands on 2 February 2027. If the notice ends the day before that date, the last working day is Monday 1 February 2027.
  • That is 91 days after 2 November (counting the same way the calculator does), one more than a 90-day notice.

Over a period that includes February, three months can also be shorter than 90 days. If your letter says months, count by calendar months; if it says days, count days.

How to check your date with the calculator

The Date Difference Calculator shows the number of days between two dates. It does not count the end date. That makes it easy to check a last working day:

  • Open the Date Difference Calculator.
  • Enter your resignation (or acceptance) date as the Start date.
  • Enter the last working day you have been given, or the one you calculated, as the End date.
  • Read Days.
  • What you should see:

Your noticeCounting methodDays shown should be
    30 daysInclusive29
    30 daysNext-day start30
    60 daysInclusive59
    60 daysNext-day start60
    90 daysInclusive89
    90 daysNext-day start90

If the number is different, the date you were given uses another method, or there is a mistake worth raising with HR.

The calculator also shows the same gap in weeks, months, years, hours and minutes. Its months figure is an average (days divided by 30.44, rounded), so use the Days figure, not the months figure, for notice periods.

Notice periods counted in working days

A few contracts, mostly for short probation-period notices, use working days. Tick Business days only (exclude weekends) in the calculator. It then counts Monday to Friday from the start date up to, but not including, the end date.

For example, from Monday 2 November 2026 to Sunday 31 January 2027 there are 65 weekdays. The calculator does not know about public holidays or company holidays, so subtract those yourself if your policy excludes them. If you need holidays excluded automatically, the Working Days Calculator has an option for some national holidays, but check its list against your company's holiday calendar.

    Things that change the date

    • Early release or buyout. Your employer may relieve you earlier, sometimes against a notice-pay recovery. The new date replaces the calculated one.
    • Leave during notice. Some policies extend the notice period by the number of leave days taken, or do not allow leave during notice. Ask before booking time off.
    • Last day on a weekend or holiday. If the 90th day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, as in the example above, HR may set your last working day to the Friday before, or keep the calendar date for paperwork. Confirm which.
    • Garden leave. You may stay on the payroll until the end date without working. Your last working day and your relieving date can then be different.

A quick way to plan backwards

If you have a joining date for a new job and need to know when to resign:

  • Take the new joining date and decide your last working day before it (often the working day before you join).
  • Subtract the notice length (minus one day for the inclusive method).
  • Check the result in the calculator: last day as end date, your planned resignation date as start date.
  • For example, to finish on Friday 29 January 2027 with a 90-day inclusive notice, you would resign on Sunday 1 November 2026 (or on the last working day before it, which simply gives a little extra notice), and the calculator should show 90 − 1 = 89 days between 1 November and 29 January.

    Frequently asked questions

If I resign on 2 November 2026 with 90 days notice, what is my last working day?

If the resignation day counts as day 1, the 90th day is Saturday 30 January 2027. If counting starts the next day, it is Sunday 31 January 2027. Your employment contract or HR policy decides which method applies.

Does the notice period include the day I resign?

It depends on your contract and company policy. Many employers count the day the resignation is accepted as day 1, others start from the next day. Ask HR to confirm the exact last working day in writing.

Is a 3-month notice period the same as 90 days?

Not exactly. Three calendar months from 2 November 2026 ends around 1 February 2027, which is 91 days later, while 90 days ends on 30 or 31 January. Months vary between 28 and 31 days, so the two methods can differ by a day or two.

How do I check my last working day with the date difference calculator?

Enter your resignation date as the start and your expected last day as the end. The calculator shows the days between them without counting the end date, so for a 90-day notice counted from the resignation day you should see 89.

Are weekends and holidays counted in a notice period?

Usually yes, because notice periods are normally stated in calendar days or months. A few contracts use working days. If yours does, tick Business days only in the calculator to exclude Saturdays and Sundays.
