Online Checklist Disappeared? Where It Is Saved and How to Keep It

The free checklist maker saves your list in your browser, not an account. Learn why a checklist can vanish, how to avoid it and how to keep a copy safe.

The short answer

The Checklist Maker has no account and no server copy. Every change you make (a new item, a tick, a new title) is saved straight away in your browser's local storage on the device you are using. Your list comes back when you reopen the page in the same browser on the same device, but it will not appear on another phone or computer, and it is wiped if you clear site data, use a private window, or load a template over it. If a list matters, print it or save it as a PDF as a backup.

How saving works

There is no save button because there is nothing to send anywhere. Each time you add an item, tick or untick a box, delete an item, rename the list or clear it, the tool writes the whole checklist (title and items) to your browser's local storage. When you open the page again, it reads that saved copy and shows it.

Three things follow from this design:

  • It is private. Your list never leaves your device, so no one else can see it.
  • It is tied to one browser. Chrome and Firefox on the same laptop keep separate storage. So do your phone and your laptop.
  • There is one list at a time. The tool stores a single checklist. Starting a new one means replacing the current one.

Seven reasons a checklist disappears

1. You opened it in a different browser or device

The most common reason. If you made a packing list on your laptop and open the site on your phone at the airport, the phone has its own, empty storage. Go back to the original browser and the list will be there.

2. You used a private or incognito window

Private windows keep storage only until you close the last private tab. Everything you wrote is deleted when the window closes. Use a normal window for lists you want to keep.

3. You cleared your browsing data

"Clear browsing data", "Clear history and website data" or "Delete cookies and site data" removes local storage along with cookies. Some browsers and cleaner apps do this automatically on exit. If yours does, add an exception for the site or keep a printed copy.

4. Safari removed it after a week without a visit

On iPhone, iPad and Mac, Safari's tracking prevention deletes script-written storage, including local storage, for a website you have not interacted with (clicked, tapped or typed on) for seven days of browser use. If you open the checklist and tick something at least once a week, the timer resets. Web pages added to the home screen are exempt from this rule, according to WebKit's own documentation.

5. You loaded a template

The Travel, Wedding, Grocery and Daily buttons fill the list with ready-made items. Because only one list is stored, the tool asks "Replace current list with template?" first. If you press OK, your previous items are replaced and cannot be recovered.

6. You pressed Clear all

Clear all empties the list immediately and saves the empty list. There is no undo.

7. Storage is blocked

If your browser blocks site storage entirely, the list works while the page is open but is not saved. You will notice because everything is gone after a reload.

How to keep a checklist safe

Print it or save it as a PDF

The Print button opens your browser's print dialog. Choose a printer for a paper copy, or choose Save as PDF (Chrome, Edge), Microsoft Print to PDF (Windows) or PDF (Mac) to keep a file you can open anywhere. The browser prints the whole web page, not only the list, so use the preview to choose just the pages that contain your items. Ticked items keep their strike-through, so a half-finished list is saved as it is.

Copy the items into a note

For a list you want to edit later on another device, select the item text on the page and paste it into a notes app or the Online Notepad. To rebuild the checklist elsewhere, add the items again one by one.

Use one browser for your lists

Pick the browser you use most and always open the checklist there. If you switch between a phone and a laptop, decide which one holds the "real" list.

Do not use templates as a "new list" button

Before loading a template, print or copy the current list if you still need it.

Tips for using the checklist maker

  • Give the list a clear title by clicking My Checklist at the top and typing over it, for example "Goa trip, 14 Dec".
  • Type an item in the box and press Enter or click + Add. Enter is faster when adding many items.
  • Tick items as you go. The progress bar and the "3/10 done" counter update straight away.
  • To delete a single item, move the pointer over it and click the × on the right.
  • If you want to plan several lists at once, keep each one as a PDF and reuse the tool for the next.
  • When a browser checklist is the wrong tool

A browser-only checklist is best for short, personal lists: packing, shopping, a moving-day plan or a one-off event. Choose something else if you need:

    • The same list on several devices that stays in sync: a notes or to-do app with an account.
    • Several people ticking the same list: a shared document or a team task tool.
    • Repeating daily routines with streaks: the Habit Tracker is built for that, though it also stores data only in your browser.

    Frequently asked questions

    Where is my checklist saved?

In your browser's local storage on the device you used. There is no account or online copy, so the list only reappears in the same browser on the same device.

    Why did my checklist disappear?

Usually because you opened the page in another browser or device, used a private window, cleared site data, loaded a template, or pressed Clear all. On Safari, storage can also be removed after seven days of browser use without visiting the site.

Can I recover a checklist after clearing browser data?

No. Clearing site data deletes the only copy. Print the list or save it as a PDF if you need a backup.

Can I make more than one checklist?

The tool stores one list at a time. Save the current list as a PDF before starting another, because loading a template or clearing the list replaces it.

Can I share my checklist with someone?

There is no share link. Print it, save it as a PDF and send the file, or copy the items into a message.
