How to Convert kg to lbs, Stone, Ounces and Tola (With Examples)

Convert kilograms to pounds, stone and ounces, and grams to tola or carats. Exact factors, quick mental shortcuts, a body-weight table and common mistakes.

The short answer

To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.20462. To convert pounds to kilograms, multiply by 0.453592 (or divide by 2.20462). So 70 kg is about 154.3 lb, and 150 lb is about 68.04 kg. One stone is 14 lb, about 6.35 kg. The Weight Converter does these instantly and shows the same value in kilograms, grams, milligrams, metric tons, pounds, ounces, stone, carats and tola at once.

The pound is defined exactly as 0.45359237 kg. The converter uses 0.453592, which is accurate to well under a milligram per pound, more precise than any bathroom or kitchen scale.

Quick mental shortcuts

  • kg to lb: double it and add 10%. 70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lb (exact: 154.32).
  • lb to kg: halve it and subtract 10% of the half. 150 lb → 75 − 7.5 = 67.5 kg (exact: 68.04).
  • kg to stone: divide by 6.35, or roughly by 6.4. 70 kg ÷ 6.35 ≈ 11.0 st.

Use the shortcuts to sanity-check a result. Use the converter when the number matters, such as medicine doses for pets, baggage allowances or shipping weights.

Converting to stone and pounds

UK scales and medical forms often write weight as "11 st 2 lb" rather than decimal stone. The converter gives decimal stone, so convert the remainder yourself:

  • Convert kg to stone: 70 kg = 11.0231 st.
  • Keep the whole number: 11 st.
  • Multiply the decimal part by 14: 0.0231 × 14 = 0.32 lb.
  • Result: 11 st 0.3 lb, which most people would write as 11 st 0 lb.
  • Another example: 80 kg = 12.5978 st. 0.5978 × 14 = 8.37, so 12 st 8.4 lb.

    Pounds and ounces to kilograms

Baby weights and some product labels use pounds and ounces together, such as 7 lb 8 oz. Convert in two steps:

  • Turn the ounces into a fraction of a pound by dividing by 16: 8 ÷ 16 = 0.5, so the weight is 7.5 lb.
  • Convert pounds to kilograms: 7.5 × 0.453592 = 3.40 kg.
  • You can also convert each part separately in the converter (7 lb = 3.175 kg, 8 oz = 0.227 kg) and add them, which gives the same 3.40 kg.

    Grams, ounces and cooking

Recipes from the US and UK often use ounces. One ounce (avoirdupois, the everyday ounce) is 28.3495 g, so:

    • 100 g = 3.53 oz
    • 250 g = 8.82 oz
    • 8 oz = 226.8 g

Fluid ounces are different. A fluid ounce measures volume, not weight. 8 fl oz of flour does not weigh 8 oz. For liquids, use the Volume Converter instead.

Gold and gemstones: tola and carat

Tola is a traditional South Asian unit still used for gold and silver in India, Pakistan and Nepal. The converter uses 1 tola = 11.66 g. So:

    • 1 tola = 11.66 g
    • 10 g = 0.858 tola

Jewellers often quote a slightly more precise value of about 11.664 g. On a 10-tola purchase, the difference between 11.66 and 11.664 is about 0.04 g, so for buying or selling gold, use the exact weight in grams on the jeweller's bill.

Carat (ct) is a unit of mass for gemstones and pearls: exactly 0.2 g, so 5 ct = 1 g. Do not confuse it with karat (K), which describes gold purity (24K, 22K, 18K) and has nothing to do with weight.

    Using the Weight Converter

  • Open the Weight Converter. It starts with kilograms to pounds.
  • Type a value. Decimals are fine, for example 2.5.
  • Choose the From and To units. The green box shows the result.
  • Scroll down to see the same value in every unit at once, which is handy when a form asks for both pounds and stone.
  • The ⇄ button swaps the units and carries the result over, so you can convert back and check.
  • Results show up to 8 decimal places, and very small or very large values switch to scientific notation (for example 1.0000e-6). Round the answer to the precision your scale or form needs.

    Common mistakes

    • Dividing instead of multiplying. kg to lb makes the number bigger; lb to kg makes it smaller. If your answer moved the wrong way, swap the operation.
    • Writing 11.5 st as 11 st 5 lb. 0.5 stone is 7 lb, so 11.5 st is 11 st 7 lb.
    • Using fluid ounces for dry ingredients. Weigh them instead.
    • Mixing up metric tons and US tons. The converter's "t" is the metric ton of 1,000 kg.
    • Rounding too early in multi-step conversions. Round only the final answer.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I convert kg to lbs?

Multiply kilograms by 2.20462. For example, 70 kg x 2.20462 = 154.32 lb. To go from pounds to kilograms, multiply by 0.453592.

How many pounds are in a stone?

Exactly 14 pounds. One stone is about 6.35 kg, so 70 kg is about 11.02 stone, or 11 st 0.3 lb.

How many grams are in one tola?

The Weight Converter uses 11.66 g per tola. Jewellers often use about 11.664 g, so for gold transactions rely on the weight in grams on the bill.

Is a carat the same as a karat?

No. A carat is a unit of mass for gemstones equal to exactly 0.2 grams. A karat describes the purity of gold, such as 22K or 24K.
