WhatsApp Chat Analyzer Says No Messages Found? How to Fix It

Fix "No WhatsApp messages found" when analysing a chat export: ZIP vs TXT files, date formats, edited exports and other causes, with step-by-step fixes.

whatsapp chat analyzer not workingwhatsapp export chat txtno whatsapp messages foundwhatsapp chat export zip fileanalyze whatsapp chat

The short answer

The WhatsApp Chat Analyzer shows "No WhatsApp messages found" when it cannot recognise a single message line in the file you uploaded. The usual causes are uploading a .zip instead of the .txt chat file, a date format the analyzer does not read (dots or dashes instead of slashes), or a file that was opened and re-saved in another app. Export the chat again Without media, upload the plain .txt file, and it normally works.

The analysis runs in your browser. The file is read on your device and is not uploaded, so you can try several exports without your chats leaving your phone or computer.

How the analyzer reads your chat

A WhatsApp export is a plain text file with one message per line, starting with a date and time. The analyzer looks for lines in one of these two shapes:

Typical sourceLine shape
Android16/10/2026, 9:15 pm - Priya: See you at 6
iPhone[16/10/2026, 21:15:04] Priya: See you at 6

Each line must have a date written with slashes, a comma, a time, and then the sender's name followed by a colon. Two-digit and four-digit years both work, and so do 12-hour (am/pm) and 24-hour times. Lines that do not match, such as "Rahul added Sam" or the encryption notice at the top, are simply skipped. If no line at all matches, you get the "No WhatsApp messages found" error.

Fix 1: You uploaded the ZIP file, not the TXT file

When you export a chat, WhatsApp may hand you a compressed .zip file, especially if you chose Include media, and on some phones even without media. The analyzer cannot read inside a ZIP; it sees compressed data and finds no messages.

  • Find the downloaded ZIP in your Files app or Downloads folder.
  • Extract it. On Windows, right-click and choose Extract All. On a Mac, double-click it. On a phone, open it in the Files app.
  • Inside you will find the chat as a .txt file, alongside any photos or voice notes.
  • Upload only that .txt file.
  • If you are exporting again, choose Without media. The file is much smaller, and media would not be analysed anyway; the analyzer counts lines like "<Media omitted>" or "image omitted" as media messages.

Fix 2: Your phone writes dates with dots or dashes

The date format inside the export can vary with your phone's language and region settings, and not every region writes dates with slashes. If your file looks like 16.10.26, 21:15 - Priya: ... or 2026-10-16 21:15 - Priya: ..., the analyzer will not recognise the lines.

Open the .txt file in any text editor and look at the first few message lines. If the date uses dots or dashes:

    • Option A: Change your phone's date format or region to one that writes dates with slashes, then export the chat again. Check the new file before uploading.
    • Option B: On a computer, use your text editor's find-and-replace to change the date separators to slashes. Only do this if you are comfortable with editors, because replacing every dot also changes dots inside messages. The Find and Replace tool can help if you replace a specific pattern, such as ".10.26," with "/10/26,".

Fix 3: The file was opened and saved in another app

Opening the chat in Word, Pages or Google Docs and saving it again can change the file. It may be saved in a different format, gain formatting, or have long lines merged. Always upload the original .txt that WhatsApp produced. If you need to look at it, open a copy in a plain text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit and close it without saving.

Also check the file name ends in .txt. If you shared the export to a notes or messaging app and copied the text back out, lines and dates can be altered along the way.

Fix 4: You exported a chat with no normal messages

A brand-new chat, or a group where only system notices appear ("You created group", "Security code changed"), contains no lines with a sender name and message, so there is nothing to count. Try a chat with real conversation in it.

Fix 5: The file is too large

The upload limit is 50 MB. A text-only export is rarely that big, but an export that was converted or combined with other files can be. Export without media, and split very long histories if needed.

How to export a chat correctly

WhatsApp's menu wording changes between versions, but the route is similar:

  • Open the individual or group chat in WhatsApp.
  • On Android: tap the three-dot menu, then More, then Export chat.
  • On iPhone: tap the contact or group name at the top to open chat info, then scroll to Export Chat.
  • Choose Without media.
  • Save the file to your device (for example to Files or Google Drive), or send it to yourself, then upload the .txt to the analyzer.
  • For long-running chats, WhatsApp may not include the entire history in an export, so the oldest messages can be missing. The analyzer's Chat Period card shows the first and last dates it read, which tells you exactly what the export covered.

When the analysis runs but the numbers look wrong

Dates and weekdays look strange. The analyzer reads dates day-first (DD/MM/YY), which is how Indian and British exports usually look. An export written month-first (MM/DD/YY), common on US settings, is read with the day and month swapped, so the weekday chart and monthly counts will be wrong. The message counts per person are not affected.

A person appears twice. Names are taken exactly as they appear in the file. If someone's saved contact name changed during the chat, or they appear once by name and once by phone number, they are counted as two people.

Emoji or word counts seem low. The top-words list ignores short words (two letters or fewer) and common English and Hinglish filler words such as "the", "hai" and "nahi", so you see the more meaningful words. Messages that were only media are counted as media, not as words.

Only the top 10 people are shown. In a large group, people beyond the ten most active are not listed in the chart.

    Privacy checklist

    • The analyzer reads the file in your browser and does not upload it.
    • Your export file still sits on your phone or computer afterwards. Delete it, and any copy you sent to yourself, if the chat is personal.
    • Get the other participants' agreement before sharing screenshots of a group's statistics.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does the WhatsApp Chat Analyzer say no messages found?

It could not recognise any message line. The usual causes are uploading a .zip instead of the .txt file, dates written with dots or dashes instead of slashes, or a file that was re-saved in another app.

Can I upload the WhatsApp ZIP file?

No. Extract the ZIP first and upload the .txt chat file inside it. Exporting without media gives a smaller file.

Is my chat uploaded to a server?

No. The analyzer reads the exported file in your browser on your device and does not send it anywhere.

Why are the weekdays wrong in my results?

The analyzer reads dates as day/month/year. Exports written month-first, as on many US phones, are read with day and month swapped, which affects date-based charts but not per-person message counts.
