WPM Explained: What Is Words Per Minute and How Is It Measured?
Understand words per minute (WPM), how typing tests measure it, and realistic speed benchmarks for different professions.
What Does WPM Mean?
WPM (Words Per Minute) is the standard unit for measuring typing speed. It measures how many words you can type accurately in one minute.
For typing tests, a "word" is standardized as 5 characters (including spaces). This standardization ensures consistency across different texts — a passage full of long words would otherwise produce misleadingly low speeds compared to a passage of short words.
Formula: WPM = (Total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ Minutes elapsed
This is your gross WPM. Net WPM accounts for errors:
Net WPM = Gross WPM - (Errors per minute)
How Typing Tests Measure Speed
Lazyblink Typing Speed Test presents a passage and starts timing when you begin typing. It tracks:
- Total characters typed
- Errors (mistyped characters)
- Elapsed time
- WPM (gross and net)
- Accuracy percentage
The passage is typically English prose at medium difficulty. Some tests use more complex vocabulary or programming-style content for higher difficulty.
WPM Benchmarks by Role
Professional typists (data entry, transcription): 65-90 WPM
Court reporters (stenography): 225+ WPM (using stenotype machines)
Average office worker: 40-55 WPM
Developers and programmers: 50-70 WPM (lower because of code syntax, shortcuts)
Average person: 35-45 WPM
Government Typing Test Standards (India)
SSC CHSL: 35 WPM (English) or 30 WPM (Hindi, Devanagari keyboard)
SSC CGL (Tax Assistant posts): 8,000 key depressions per hour = approximately 27 WPM
Railway Clerk posts: 35 WPM
IBPS Clerk: Speed and accuracy standards for computer proficiency
Most government typing tests run for 10-15 minutes on a provided passage.
Improving Your Speed
Touch typing is the foundation — all 10 fingers, without looking at the keyboard. Even dedicated practice of 20-30 minutes daily produces significant improvement within 3-4 weeks. Use Lazyblink Typing Speed Test to track your baseline and progress weekly.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed for government jobs in India?
SSC CHSL and most central government typing posts require 35 WPM in English. For most office positions, 40-50 WPM is considered proficient.
How is WPM calculated?
