What Is Lorem Ipsum? Meaning, Origin and How Much to Use
What lorem ipsum means, where the Latin comes from, when placeholder text helps or hurts a design, and how many words or paragraphs to generate for each layout.
The short answer
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used as placeholder text, so a page layout can be judged before the real words are written. It comes from a passage in Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, but the words have been cut and rearranged, so it does not mean anything as a whole. You can make as much as you need with the free Lorem Ipsum Generator: up to 10 paragraphs, 20 sentences or 500 words at a time.
Where lorem ipsum comes from
The text is a corrupted extract from Book 1 of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the ends of good and evil"), sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33, written in the 1st century BC. The well-known opening "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" is a chopped version of a sentence that begins "...dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet" in the original. "Lorem" is not a real Latin word; it is the tail of "dolorem" (pain).
The link to Cicero was first explained in print in 1994 by Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar, who traced the unusual word "consectetur" back to the original passage. The version most people know today spread through Letraset dry-transfer sheets from the 1960s and later through desktop publishing and word-processing software.
So when someone asks "what does lorem ipsum mean?", the honest answer is: individual words are Latin or near-Latin, but the sentences are deliberately broken and should be read as meaningless filler.
Why designers use meaningless text
Placeholder text exists to stop people reading. If a mock-up contains real sentences, reviewers start editing the copy instead of judging the layout. Lorem ipsum has a few properties that make it useful for this:
- Word lengths are fairly natural. Short and long words are mixed in a way that looks like ordinary prose, so line breaks and text density resemble a real page.
- It is obviously not final. Nobody mistakes it for approved copy.
- It is language-neutral. Teams working in English, Hindi or any other language all recognise it as filler.
When lorem ipsum hurts more than it helps
Placeholder text is useful early, but it can hide real problems:
- Headlines and buttons. Real headings are often much longer or shorter than "Lorem ipsum dolor". A button that fits "Lorem ipsum" may not fit "Download your statement". Use realistic draft wording for these.
- Content-led pages. On a blog, landing page or help article, the words are the product. Designing around filler can produce a layout that does not suit the real content.
- Other languages. German and Tamil words, for example, are often longer than English ones, and Hindi needs room for matras above and below the line. If your site will be translated, test with real translated samples, not Latin.
- Forgotten filler. Lorem ipsum that reaches a live site looks careless and gives search engines meaningless text to index. Search your project for "lorem" before publishing.
How much placeholder text to generate
The generator works in three modes. Here is what each one produces, based on how the tool builds its text:
| Mode | What one unit contains | Maximum per click |
|---|---|---|
| Paragraphs | 3 to 6 sentences | 10 paragraphs |
| Sentences | 8 to 20 words, ending with a full stop | 20 sentences |
| Words | Single words separated by spaces | 500 words |
Because sentence and paragraph lengths are random within those ranges, the word count changes every time you click Regenerate. The tool shows the word and character count under the output, so check it if you need a specific length.
Typical amounts for common layouts
These are practical starting points, not rules. Match them to your real content plan where you have one.
- Card or product tile description: 1 sentence, or 15 to 25 words in Words mode.
- Hero section subheading: 1 to 2 sentences.
- Blog post preview or excerpt: 1 paragraph.
- Full article template: 5 to 10 paragraphs, ideally mixed with real headings so you can see heading spacing.
- Testing text overflow: Words mode with a high count, pasted into a small box, to see how the design handles very long content.
- Filling a form field or table cell: Words mode with 2 to 5 words.
If you know your real article will be about 1,000 words, generate paragraphs until the counter shows roughly that number. The Word Counter can also check any text you paste.
How to generate lorem ipsum with the tool
The first sentence always starts with "Lorem ipsum", so it is instantly recognisable as filler. In Words mode the output starts "Lorem ipsum" and continues with random words from the classic vocabulary, without capital letters or full stops, which is handy for short labels.
Tip: if you switch modes after picking a large number (for example, 400 words, then switch to Paragraphs), move the slider again before generating. The slider range changes with the mode, and setting it again makes sure you get the amount you expect.
Common mistakes with placeholder text
Using the same paragraph everywhere
Copying one block into every section makes a page look more uniform than it will be. Generate separate blocks so paragraph lengths vary, which is closer to real writing.
Leaving filler in alt text, meta descriptions or titles
Placeholder text is easy to forget in places you do not see on the page, such as image alt attributes, page titles and meta descriptions. These are read by screen readers and search engines. Replace them before launch. If you need help writing a real description, the Meta Tag Generator shows the tags a page needs.
Testing only the ideal length
Real content is messy. Test the shortest and the longest likely text, not only a neat medium paragraph. A product name might be two words or twelve.
Treating lorem ipsum as "any Latin"
Some people search for the "translation" of lorem ipsum to put a meaningful version on a site. Because the text is scrambled, any translation is only approximate. If you want meaningful sample copy, write a short draft in plain language instead.
Alternatives to lorem ipsum
- Draft copy. Even rough real text gives better feedback on headings and calls to action.
- Content outlines. Write the heading and a one-line summary of what each section will say.
- Real data samples. For tables and dashboards, use realistic names, numbers and dates so column widths are right.
Lorem ipsum is best for the stage where you are judging spacing, typography and rhythm, and not yet the words themselves.
Frequently asked questions
What does lorem ipsum mean?
As a whole it means nothing. It is a scrambled extract from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33). "Lorem" is a fragment of the Latin word "dolorem".
Why is lorem ipsum used instead of real text?
Meaningless text stops reviewers reading and editing the copy, so they focus on layout, spacing and typography. It also looks obviously unfinished.
How many words is one paragraph of lorem ipsum?
In the Lazyblink generator, a paragraph has 3 to 6 sentences and each sentence has 8 to 20 words, so a paragraph is roughly 24 to 120 words. The exact count is shown under the output.
How much lorem ipsum can I generate at once?
Up to 10 paragraphs, 20 sentences or 500 words per click. Click again and combine the results if you need more.
Is it bad to leave lorem ipsum on a live website?
Yes. It looks unfinished to visitors and gives search engines meaningless text. Search your pages, titles, alt text and meta descriptions for "lorem" before publishing.
