What Is HEIC Format? Why iPhone Uses It and How to Open It
Understand HEIC image format, why Apple uses it, compatibility issues on Windows, and how to convert HEIC to JPG.
What Is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard. Introduced with iOS 11 in 2017, HEIC replaced JPEG as the default photo format on iPhones and iPads.
Why Apple Switched to HEIC
The primary reason is storage efficiency. HEIC files are approximately 50% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. A photo that would be 3MB in JPEG is roughly 1.5MB in HEIC.
For a phone with 64GB storage and thousands of photos, this is significant. Apple estimated users could store twice as many photos with HEIC vs JPEG.
Technical Advantages of HEIC
12-bit color depth vs JPEG's 8-bit (more subtle color gradations, especially in skies and skin tones).
Better handling of HDR content.
Live Photos (moving pictures) stored in a single file.
Image sequences for burst mode photography.
Lossless editing of certain parameters.
The Compatibility Problem
HEIC is natively supported on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. But Windows, most Android devices, most websites, and most photo editing software do not support HEIC by default. This creates problems when:
- Sharing photos with non-Apple users
- Uploading to websites, forms, or portals
- Opening on Windows without the HEIF codec installed
- Editing in older Adobe software
Solutions
Convert to JPG: Use Lazyblink HEIC to JPG converter. Upload HEIC files and download JPG versions.
Install Windows HEIF codec: Available free in the Microsoft Store (search "HEIF Image Extensions"). Once installed, Photos app and other Windows software can open HEIC.
Prevent HEIC at source on iPhone: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. iPhone will capture in JPEG instead of HEIC. The trade-off is roughly double the storage usage per photo.
Frequently asked questions
Why do iPhones use HEIC instead of JPG?
HEIC files are approximately 50% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, allowing iPhones to store significantly more photos in the same storage space.
Can I open HEIC on Windows?
Windows 10/11 can open HEIC after installing the free "HEIF Image Extensions" from the Microsoft Store. Alternatively, convert HEIC to JPG using Lazyblink for universal compatibility.
