EPF Withdrawal Rules: When Can You Withdraw Your PF?
Understand EPF withdrawal rules — full withdrawal, partial, advance, and online claim process.
EPF Full Withdrawal Conditions
You can withdraw your entire EPF balance (your contribution + employer contribution + interest) in these situations:
Retirement: At age 58 or after retirement. Full balance tax-free after 5 years of continuous service.
Unemployment: After 2 months of continuous unemployment, you can withdraw the full balance. The 1-month waiting period was removed in 2016 — you can partially withdraw after 1 month.
Death of member: Nominee receives the full balance.
EPF Partial Withdrawals (Advances)
The EPFO allows advances for specific purposes before retirement:
Medical: Up to 6 months basic salary or your share + interest, whichever is lower. No service condition.
Marriage: Up to 50% of your (employee) contribution after 7 years of service.
Education: Up to 50% of your contribution after 7 years. Children's education only.
Home purchase or construction: Higher amounts available, specific conditions apply.
Tax on EPF Withdrawal
Tax-free if: You have at least 5 years of continuous service.
Taxable if: You withdraw before 5 years of continuous service. If you changed jobs and did not merge/transfer your PF, each stint counts separately.
Service from different employers counts toward the 5-year rule only if PF was transferred (not withdrawn) between jobs.

Frequently asked questions
Can I withdraw my PF before retirement?
Yes — you can partially withdraw for specific purposes (medical, marriage, education, home) after specified service periods. Full withdrawal is allowed after 2 months of unemployment or at retirement.
Is EPF withdrawal taxable?
EPF withdrawal is tax-free if you have completed 5 years of continuous service. Withdrawal before 5 years is taxable as income. Transferring PF when changing jobs preserves the 5-year continuity.
