How to Rotate a PDF and Save It Permanently (90°, 180°, 270°)

Rotate a sideways or upside-down PDF and save the change permanently: 90° clockwise in one pass, 180° and 270° by repeating, plus how to fix just one page.

The short answer

To rotate a PDF permanently, upload it to the free Rotate PDF tool and download the new file. Each pass turns every page 90° clockwise and saves the rotation in the file, so it stays rotated in any PDF reader. For 180° (upside down), run the downloaded file through the tool a second time; for 270° (90° anticlockwise), run it three times.

Why rotating in a PDF viewer does not stick

Most PDF readers have a "rotate view" button. That only changes how the page is shown on your screen at that moment. When you close the file, email it or upload it to a portal, the pages are still sideways.

A permanent rotation changes the page's rotation setting inside the PDF file itself. Every PDF page has a rotation value, which can be 0°, 90°, 180° or 270°, and readers apply it when they display or print the page. The Rotate PDF tool updates that value and saves a new copy of the document.

Because only the rotation setting changes, the page content is not re-drawn or re-compressed. Text stays selectable and images keep their quality. The file size usually stays almost the same.

How to rotate a PDF 90° clockwise

  • Open Rotate PDF.
  • Drop your PDF onto the upload area or click to choose it. Files up to 50 MB are accepted.
  • The tool rotates all pages 90° clockwise straight away.
  • Click Download PDF. The new file has _processed added to its name, for example scan_processed.pdf.
  • Open the downloaded file to check the result.
  • Processing happens in your browser, so the PDF is not uploaded to a server.

How to rotate 180° or 270°

The tool adds 90° clockwise each time you run a file through it. To get other angles, repeat with the file you just downloaded:

    You wantWhat to doPasses
90° clockwise (top goes to the right)Run once1
180° (upside down)Run, download, run the new file again2
    270° clockwise (same as 90° anticlockwise)Repeat three times3
Back to the originalFour passes bring it full circle4

Example: a scanned page is upside down. Upload letter.pdf, download letter_processed.pdf, then upload that file and download again. The second file is the right way up.

The tool adds to the existing rotation rather than replacing it. If a page was already set to 90° and you run it once, it becomes 180°.

    Which way should I rotate?

Look at where the top of the page is now:

    • Top is on the left: rotate 90° clockwise (1 pass).
    • Top is at the bottom (upside down): rotate 180° (2 passes).
    • Top is on the right: rotate 90° anticlockwise, which is 270° clockwise (3 passes).

    Fixing only one page

Rotate PDF turns every page in the file. If only some pages are sideways, such as a landscape table in the middle of a portrait report, use this workaround:

  • Use Split PDF to separate the document. Enter page ranges such as 1-4, 5, 6-10 so the sideways page (page 5 here) becomes its own file.
  • Run only that single-page file through Rotate PDF.
  • Put the parts back together in order with Merge PDF.
  • Splitting by ranges is explained in more detail in how to split a PDF into pages or sections.

    Common problems and fixes

The pages look rotated in the wrong direction

Remember the direction is always clockwise. If one pass made it worse, run the file two more times (three passes in total equals 90° anticlockwise), or start again with the original file and do three passes.

Some pages were already correct and are now sideways

The tool rotates every page by the same amount. If your document has a mix, use the split-rotate-merge method above.

The PDF will not open after rotating

Password-protected or damaged PDFs may not process correctly. If the file needs a password to open, remove the password first using the PDF's own software or the original source, then rotate a fresh copy. Keep the original file until you have checked the rotated one.

A portal still shows the scan sideways

Some upload portals generate a preview from the image data and may ignore the page's rotation setting. If that happens, open the rotated PDF in a standard reader to confirm it is correct, then try printing it to a new PDF from that reader, which bakes the orientation into the page.

Check the result before you send it

A quick check saves a rejected upload or a confused recipient:

  • Open the downloaded file in a different PDF reader from the one you normally use, or in your browser. If it looks right in two places, the rotation is stored in the file.
  • Scroll through every page, not just the first. The tool rotates all pages by the same amount, so a page that was correct before will now be turned.
  • Check the file name. The rotated copy ends in _processed.pdf; rename it to something clear before attaching it to an email or portal.
  • Keep the original until you are sure. If something goes wrong, starting again from the original is easier than undoing several passes.
  • If the file is too large for an upload limit after rotating, rotation is not the cause, because it barely changes the size. Use Compress PDF to reduce it.

Rotating photos before making a PDF

If you are creating a PDF from phone photos of documents, it is often easier to get the orientation right before converting. The guide to combining phone photos of documents into one PDF covers taking straight, readable photos and converting them with JPG to PDF.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a PDF and save it?

Upload the PDF to Rotate PDF and click Download PDF. Every page is turned 90° clockwise and the rotation is saved in the new file, so it stays rotated in any reader.

How do I rotate a PDF 180 degrees?

Run the file through Rotate PDF, download it, then run the downloaded file through again. Two 90° clockwise passes make 180°.

Can I rotate just one page?

The tool rotates all pages. Split the PDF so the page is on its own, rotate that file, then merge the parts back together in order.

Does rotating a PDF reduce quality?

No. Only the page rotation setting changes; text and images are not re-compressed, so quality and file size stay about the same.
