The short answer

When a PDF is converted to Word, formatting is lost because a PDF stores text as positioned fragments on a page, not as paragraphs, tables and styles. The PDF to Word converter extracts the text only: each line of the PDF becomes a separate paragraph in a plain .docx file, with no images, tables, fonts or columns. That makes it good for getting editable text quickly, but not for reproducing a designed layout. Below is how to clean up the result, and which other route to take when you need the layout too.

Why PDFs do not convert cleanly

A Word document knows that a group of lines is one paragraph, that a grid is a table, and that a heading uses a heading style. A PDF usually does not. It stores instructions such as "draw these characters at this position in this font". Paragraphs, columns and tables exist only visually. Any converter has to guess the structure back from positions, and every converter guesses differently.

What the Lazyblink converter does

Knowing the exact process explains every result you see:

  • It reads the text layer of each page in your browser using PDF.js.
  • It groups text fragments that sit at the same height on the page into one line.
  • It writes each line as its own paragraph, from top to bottom.
  • It adds an empty paragraph between pages.
  • It saves a real .docx file on A4 pages with 1-inch margins, which opens in Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice.
  • What it does not carry over:

    • Fonts, sizes, bold and italic
    • Images, logos and signatures
    • Tables, borders and shading
    • Headers, footers and page numbers as separate sections
    • Hyperlinks

If the PDF has no text layer at all, for example a scanned page or a phone photo saved as a PDF, the tool stops and tells you no selectable text was found.

    Common problems and fixes

Every line ends with a paragraph break

Because each PDF line becomes a paragraph, a paragraph that wrapped over five lines in the PDF arrives as five short paragraphs. To join them in Word:

  • Open Find and Replace: Ctrl + H in Word for Windows, or Edit, Find, Replace on a Mac.
  • First protect the real paragraph breaks. In the converted file, pages are separated by empty paragraphs, and you may have added blank lines between paragraphs yourself. Replace ^p^p with a placeholder such as ##.
  • Replace ^p with a single space. This joins the wrapped lines.
  • Replace ## with ^p to restore the real breaks.
  • If paragraphs in your file are not separated by blank lines, add them first where each new paragraph starts, then run the steps. For short documents, deleting the breaks by hand is often quicker. You can also clean the text before pasting it anywhere with the line break remover.

    Two-column text is mixed together

Lines are grouped by their height on the page. In a two-column layout, the left and right columns share the same heights, so a line from the left column and a line from the right column are joined into one paragraph. The words are all there but read across both columns.

    Fixes:

    • If you only need part of the text, copy it straight from the PDF in your reader, one column at a time.
    • For a whole document, use a converter that detects columns, such as opening the PDF directly in Word (see below).

Tables arrive as lines of words

Each row of a table becomes one line with the cell values separated by spaces. To rebuild a table in Word, select those lines and use Insert, Table, Convert Text to Table with spaces or tabs as the separator, then fix any cells that contained spaces. For tables of numbers, the PDF to Excel converter is designed for that job.

    Strange spacing inside words

Some PDFs store each word, or even each letter, as a separate fragment. When the tool joins fragments on the same line, it puts a space between them, so you may see "Invo ice" or extra spaces. Use Find and Replace to fix repeated errors, or a spell check pass.

The text comes out in the wrong order

The tool orders lines from the top of the page to the bottom. Text boxes, sidebars and captions placed at the same height as the main text are merged into those lines. Delete or move the pieces that do not belong.

    "No selectable text found"

The PDF is an image. Run it through PDF OCR first to add a text layer, then convert. The guide to converting scanned PDFs to editable Word text covers that route step by step.

    The PDF is password-protected

If the PDF needs a password to open, the tool asks you to unlock it first. You need the password; no converter can legitimately skip an open password.

When you need the layout, not just the text

If you must keep fonts, images and tables, use a converter that rebuilds layout:

    • Microsoft Word (desktop): choose File, Open and select the PDF. Word converts it into an editable document and tries to keep layout, columns and tables. Complex designs may still shift.
    • Google Docs: upload the PDF to Google Drive, right-click it and choose Open with, Google Docs. This keeps mostly text and simple formatting, and runs OCR on scanned pages.
    • The original source file: if someone made the PDF from a Word file, asking them for the .docx is the most reliable option by far.

    Choose by goal:

Keep the full designOpen in Microsoft Word, or ask for the source file
Extract tables of numbersPDF to Excel
Scanned pagesPDF OCR first, then convert

For small corrections, converting is often unnecessary: the guide on editing a PDF online free shows how to add or cover text in the PDF itself.

    Privacy

The conversion runs entirely in your browser: the PDF is read with PDF.js and the .docx is built with JSZip on your device, so the file is not uploaded. That makes it suitable for documents such as payslips or contracts that you would not want to send to an unknown server.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does my PDF to Word conversion lose formatting?

A PDF stores text as positioned fragments, not paragraphs and tables. A text-only converter recreates the words but not fonts, images or tables.

How do I remove the extra line breaks after converting?

In Word, use Find and Replace: protect double breaks with a placeholder, replace single ^p with a space, then restore the placeholder as ^p.

Why are two columns mixed together in the Word file?

Lines at the same height are joined, so left and right column lines merge. Copy each column separately or open the PDF directly in Word.

How do I keep the layout when converting PDF to Word?

Open the PDF in desktop Microsoft Word, which rebuilds layout, or ask for the original .docx file.
