Merged PDF Pages in the Wrong Order? How to Control the Order
Why merged PDFs come out in the wrong order and how to fix it: add files in sequence, rename with numbers, and rebuild a merged file in the right page order.
The short answer
Merge PDF joins files in the order they appear in its list, and every file you add goes to the end of that list. If the result is in the wrong order, the files were added in the wrong order, often because several were selected at once and the computer passed them alphabetically. Add the files one at a time in the order you want, check the numbered list, then merge. To fix a file that is already merged, split it into sections and merge the sections again in the right order.
How the Merge PDF tool orders files
The tool keeps a simple list:
- Every PDF you add, by clicking the drop area or dragging files onto it, is appended to the bottom of the list.
- The final file starts with all pages of the first file in the list, then all pages of the second, and so on.
- Pages inside each file keep their original order.
- The X button removes a file from the list.
- The list cannot be dragged to reorder it, even though each row shows a grip icon.
You need at least two files before the Merge N PDFs into one button becomes active. The result downloads as merged_document.pdf, and the files are processed in your browser rather than uploaded.
Why the order goes wrong
1. You selected several files at once
When you highlight several files in the file picker and click Open, the browser receives them in the order the operating system lists them. That is often alphabetical by file name, not the order you clicked them. If you click Resume.pdf first and then Cover letter.pdf, the cover letter can still end up first, because C comes before R.
Dragging a selection of files from a folder onto the drop area behaves the same way.
2. File names sort differently from what you expect
Plain alphabetical sorting compares characters one by one, so Page 10.pdf sorts before Page 2.pdf, because 1 comes before 2. Some file managers use a smarter number-aware order and others do not, so the order you see in a folder is not a guarantee. Files named scan (1).pdf, scan (2).pdf ... scan (10).pdf can end up in a confusing order for the same reason. The guide on why 10 comes before 2 when sorting explains this in detail.
3. You added a file late
If you forgot a file and added it afterwards, it went to the end of the list, not where it belongs.
4. The pages were wrong inside one file
If a scanned document was fed into the scanner back to front, its pages are reversed inside that PDF. Merging keeps each file's pages exactly as they are, so the merge cannot fix this. See the last section for what to do.
Method 1: add files one at a time (simplest)
This takes a few more clicks than a multi-select, but it is the most reliable way to get the order right.
Method 2: rename files with numbers first
If you merge many files, rename them so their alphabetical order matches the order you want, then select them all at once:
| Instead of | Rename to |
|---|---|
| Cover letter.pdf | 01 Cover letter.pdf |
| Resume.pdf | 02 Resume.pdf |
| Degree certificate.pdf | 03 Degree certificate.pdf |
| Experience letter.pdf | 04 Experience letter.pdf |
Use two-digit numbers (01, 02 ... 10, 11) so that 10 does not sort before 2. If you have more than 99 files, use three digits.
After selecting, check the list in the tool before merging. File pickers usually sort by name, but if yours was set to sort by date or size, the order can differ. If the list looks wrong, remove the files with X and add them one by one.
Method 3: fix a PDF that is already merged in the wrong order
You do not have to start again from the original files.
01 cover letter.pdf, 02 resume.pdf, 03 certificates.pdf.Fixing pages reversed inside a scan
If a single scanned file is back to front, split it into single pages, then merge the pages starting from the last one. For long scans, it is quicker to rescan with the pages in the right order, or check whether your scanner or scanning app has a reverse-order option.
Other problems after merging
Some pages are sideways or upside down
Merging keeps each page's rotation. Rotate the merged file with Rotate PDF, or rotate the original file before merging it.
Pages from one file are blank or unreadable
This usually means that file was password-protected. Open it with its password in a PDF viewer, save or print it to a new PDF without the password, and merge that copy instead.
The merged file is too large to email or upload
Merging adds the sizes of all files together. Reduce it with Compress PDF, or split it into smaller parts if the portal allows several uploads.
A quick checklist before you merge
- Decide the final order and write it down if there are many files.
- Rename files with 01, 02, 03 prefixes, or plan to add them one by one.
- Check that each file opens without a password.
- Look at the tool's list from top to bottom before clicking Merge.
- Open the merged PDF and flip through it before you send it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the order of files when merging PDFs?
In the Lazyblink Merge PDF tool, files are merged in the order they appear in the list, and each new file is added to the end. Add the files one at a time in the order you want, and check the list before clicking Merge.
Can I drag files to reorder them in Merge PDF?
No. The list cannot be reordered by dragging. To move a file, remove it with the X button and add it again so it goes to the end of the list, or clear the list and add the files again in the right order.
Why did my PDFs merge in alphabetical order?
When you select several files at once in a file picker, the browser passes them in the order the operating system lists them, which is often by name rather than the order you clicked. Add files one by one, or rename them with number prefixes such as 01, 02 and 03 first.
How do I fix the page order after merging?
Split the merged PDF into parts with Split PDF so each section is its own file, then merge those parts again in the correct order. Pages inside each original file keep their order during a merge.
