How to Write Markdown Notes Online With a Live Preview

Write formatted notes online in Markdown: headings, bold, italic, code and bullets that the notepad preview supports, what it ignores, and how notes are saved.

The short answer

The free Online Notepad lets you type notes in Markdown and switch to a formatted view with the Preview button. It understands #, ## and ### headings, **bold**, *italic*, inline code in backticks and - bullet lists. Other Markdown, such as links, numbered lists, tables and quotes, is shown as plain text. Notes save automatically in your browser about a second and a half after you stop typing.

What Markdown is, in one minute

Markdown is a way of formatting plain text with a few symbols. Instead of clicking a Bold button, you type **important**. The text stays readable as it is, and a Markdown viewer turns the symbols into formatting. It is widely used in note apps, README files, chat tools and documentation, so a note written this way can be pasted elsewhere without losing its structure.

Line breaks are kept exactly as you type them, so you do not need a blank line between paragraphs for them to show separately.

Writing a note step by step

  • Open the Online Notepad.
  • Type or paste your text into the editor.
  • Add structure with headings and bullets, for example:
  • - # Project kickoff

    - ## Decisions

    - - Launch date moved to **15 Jan**

    - - Use *staging* for testing

  • Click Preview to see the formatted version. Click Edit to go back.
  • Watch the label next to "Notepad" at the top: it shows Saving… while you type and ✓ Saved once the note is stored.
  • The bar at the bottom shows live counts of words, characters and lines.

    A template for meeting notes

Paste this structure and fill it in. Every line uses formatting the preview supports:

    • # Weekly sync – 3 Nov
    • ## Attendees
    • - Priya, Rahul, Sam
    • ## Discussed
    • - Budget for Q1 is **approved**
    • - Hiring plan is *on hold*
    • ## Actions
    • - Rahul: send revised timeline by **Wed**
    • - Sam: book venue

Because numbered lists are not supported, use bullets for steps, or write "Step 1", "Step 2" at the start of each bullet.

    Tips and gotchas

    Asterisks in maths or prices

A single asterisk on each side of something turns it italic. If you type 2*3*4, the preview shows "2", an italic "3" and "4". Use a space around the asterisk (2 * 3 * 4) or the × symbol to avoid this.

Bullets need a dash and a space

    - item becomes a bullet. -item without the space, or * item with an asterisk, stays as plain text.

Headings need a space after the hashes

    ## Actions is a heading. ##Actions is not.

    HTML in your notes

The preview does not strip HTML. If your note contains tags such as <b>, the preview treats them as formatting rather than showing them as text. That is handy if you know HTML, but do not paste HTML or code you do not trust into the notepad and then open Preview. In Edit mode, everything is shown as plain text.

Saving, copying and moving your notes

    • Autosave: the note is kept in your browser's local storage on this device. It survives closing the tab and restarting the browser.
    • Copy: copies the raw Markdown text, so you can paste it into another Markdown-aware app with the formatting symbols intact.
    • ↓ .txt: downloads the note as notes.txt. If you want other apps to recognise it as Markdown, rename it to notes.md.
    • Clear: deletes the note after a confirmation. This cannot be undone, so download first if you might need it.

The notepad holds one note at a time. Starting a new topic means either clearing the current one or keeping both in the same note under separate headings.

Notes are not synced. They will not appear on your phone if you wrote them on your laptop, and they are lost if you clear your browser data or use a private window. For more on where notes are stored and how to avoid losing them, see where your notes are saved.

When to use a different tool

    • You need links, tables or numbered lists in the formatted output. Use a full Markdown editor, or write in the notepad and convert elsewhere.
    • You want to share a formatted page. Copy the Markdown into an app that publishes it, or turn it into a document.
    • You are tracking tasks with checkboxes. A checklist works better; try the Checklist Maker, which lets you tick items and print the list.
    • You need a word count for an essay or post. The notepad shows a basic count; the Word Counter adds reading time and more detail.

For quick, private notes with light formatting that stay on your own device, the notepad's Markdown preview is usually enough.

    Frequently asked questions

Which Markdown does the Lazyblink notepad support?

The preview supports #, ## and ### headings, double-asterisk bold, single-asterisk italic, backtick code and bullet lines that start with a dash and a space.

Does the notepad support links, tables or numbered lists?

No. Those are shown exactly as typed in the preview. Use bullets with Step 1, Step 2 instead of numbered lists.

    Where are my notes saved?

In your browser's local storage on the device you are using. They are kept after closing the tab but are not synced to other devices and are lost if you clear browser data.
