When to Use PNG

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is the right format when:

Transparency is required: Logos, icons, stickers, and overlays with transparent backgrounds must be PNG.

Screenshot with text: PNG preserves text sharpness without JPEG compression artefacts.

Web graphics and icons: Icons and interface elements look sharper in PNG.

Images for further editing: PNG is lossless — it can be saved multiple times without quality loss.

When NOT to use PNG:

Photographs: JPG or WebP are 3-5x smaller with visually identical quality.

Social media photos: Use JPG — it loads faster.

  • Upload any image (JPG, WebP, GIF, HEIC, BMP, or TIFF)
  • Select PNG as output format
  • Download the converted PNG
  • File Size Consideration

PNG files are larger than JPG for photographic content. A 2MB JPG photograph might become an 8MB PNG. This is fine for editing and logos but not for web delivery of photos.

Always use JPG or WebP for photographs on websites and email.

    Frequently asked questions

Why is my PNG file so much larger than my JPG?

PNG is lossless and supports more colour depth. For photographs, PNG files are typically 3-5x larger than JPG with no visible quality improvement. Only use PNG when you need transparency or lossless quality.

Does converting to PNG improve image quality?

If converting from JPG, the original compression is already applied — PNG will preserve the current quality but will not recover lost detail. PNG prevents further quality loss on re-saving.
