How to Brighten a Dark Photo Online (Without Washing It Out)

Fix an underexposed photo with brightness, contrast and saturation: the slider settings that lift shadows, what each preset does, and when it won't help.

The short answer

Open the Photo Enhancer, load your photo and start with Brightness around 125 to 135 and Contrast around 90 to 100, then add a little Saturation (110 to 120) if the colours look flat. Raising brightness alone mostly brightens the mid-tones and can clip the highlights to pure white, while easing contrast slightly is what lifts the darkest areas. Download the result as a full-size JPG. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox: Safari does not apply these adjustments.

What the Photo Enhancer can do

The tool has four sliders and five presets:

ControlRangeNeutral value
Brightness50 to 160100
Contrast50 to 160100
Saturation0 to 200100
Sharpen0 to 1000

The presets set all four at once:

PresetBrightnessContrastSaturationSharpen
Auto Enhance10511211520
Vivid10211813510
Bright1151051050
B&W105115015
Reset1001001000

The preview updates as you move a slider, and ⬇ Download Enhanced saves the photo at its original pixel size as a JPG.

Why brightness alone often looks wrong

Brightness here works by multiplying every colour value. At 115%, a pixel with a value of 200 (out of 255) becomes 230, and anything above about 222 is pushed all the way to 255, pure white. Dark pixels barely move: a value of 20 becomes 23.

So on a dark photo:

  • the sky, windows and white clothes blow out to plain white first,
  • while the shadows you wanted to see stay almost as dark.

Contrast does the opposite job. Lowering contrast pulls dark values up towards the middle and bright values down. Combining the two is the key.

What the numbers do to real pixel values

We ran the same calculation the browser uses on a few sample values (0 is black, 255 is white):

Original valueBright preset (115 / 105)Brightness 130 onlyBrightness 130, Contrast 90
20 (deep shadow)182636
40 (shadow)425260
80 (dark mid-tone)90104106
128 (mid-tone)148166163
200 (light)235255242

Look at the first row. The Bright preset makes the deepest shadow slightly darker, because its contrast is above 100. Brightness 130 with contrast 90 nearly doubles it. That is why the presets are fine for a photo that is only a bit dull, but a properly dark photo needs the sliders.

The trade-off is in the last row: with contrast below 100, nothing reaches pure white, so very low contrast can make whites look slightly grey. Keep contrast at 90 or above in most cases.

Step-by-step: fixing a dark photo

  • Open the Photo Enhancer and drop your photo (up to 25 MB).
  • Move Brightness to about 125. Watch the brightest parts of the picture; stop before they turn into flat white patches.
  • Lower Contrast to between 90 and 95 if the shadows are still too dark.
  • Raise Saturation to 110 to 120. Brightening and lowering contrast make colours look washed out, and a small saturation boost restores them. Watch skin tones; if faces turn orange, back off.
  • Leave Sharpen at 0 or low. In this tool, Sharpen overlays a higher-contrast copy of the image rather than truly sharpening edges, so it will not fix blur and can bring back the harshness you just removed.
  • Click ⬇ Download Enhanced. The file is saved as enhanced.jpg.
  • If you go too far, click Reset and start again.

    Settings for common situations

    Photo problemStarting point
Slightly dull phone photoAuto Enhance or Bright preset
Indoor photo, too dark overallBrightness 125 to 135, Contrast 95, Saturation 110
Backlit face (bright window behind)Brightness 120, Contrast 90, then check the window is not fully white
Dark scanned documentBrightness 120 to 130, Contrast 110 to 120, Saturation 0 for black and white
Night photo with lightsSmall changes only: Brightness 110, Saturation 105

For documents, higher contrast is helpful because you want the paper white and the text black, the opposite of a portrait.

When brightening will not save a photo

Brightening reveals what the camera captured; it cannot invent detail. Expect limits when:

    • The shadows are almost pure black. There is too little information there, and lifting it shows noise (grain and coloured speckles) rather than detail.
    • The photo is blurry. No brightness setting fixes motion blur or missed focus. See Can You Fix a Blurry Photo Online? What a Photo Enhancer Can Do.
    • Highlights are already blown. If the sky is pure white in the original, lowering brightness only turns it grey.

When a photo is very dark and grainy, a modest improvement usually looks better than pushing the sliders to the maximum.

Browser support: use Chrome, Edge or Firefox

The tool draws your photo onto a canvas and applies the browser's built-in filter functions. Chrome (52 and later), Edge (79 and later) and Firefox (49 and later) support filters on canvas. According to caniuse, Safari, on both Mac and iPhone, has the feature disabled by default, so the sliders may have no visible effect and the downloaded file will look like the original. On iPhone and iPad, other browsers are generally built on Safari's engine, so try a computer with Chrome, Edge or Firefox instead.

    Other things to know

    • Your photo stays on your device. The image is processed in the browser and is not uploaded.
    • The download is always JPG. A transparent PNG will get a solid background, so this tool is not the right choice for logos with transparency.
    • Full resolution is kept. The output has the same width and height as the input. If you need a smaller file for a form, use Compress Image afterwards.
    • Remove location data before sharing. Photos from phones often contain GPS information. The Photo Metadata Viewer & Remover shows and removes it.

    Frequently asked questions

What brightness setting should I use for a dark photo?

Start with brightness around 125 to 135 and contrast around 90 to 100, then add saturation of 110 to 120 if colours look flat. Stop raising brightness before the brightest areas turn plain white.

Why does my brightened photo look washed out?

Brightness multiplies colour values, so highlights clip to white while shadows barely change. Lower contrast slightly to lift shadows and add a little saturation to restore colour.

Why do the sliders do nothing on my iPhone?

The tool uses canvas filters, which Safari has disabled by default. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer.

Can brightening fix a very dark, grainy photo?

Only partly. Brightening reveals captured detail but also the noise in the shadows. Moderate settings usually look better than maximum ones.
