The short answer

To type in Hindi by voice, open the Speech to Text tool in Chrome or Edge, choose Hindi in the Language menu, click Start speaking, allow the microphone, and speak in short, clear phrases. The text appears in the box as each phrase is recognised. When you finish, click Stop recording, correct any words, and use Copy or the download button to save it as a text file.

Step-by-step: Hindi voice typing

  • Open the tool in Chrome or Edge. The tool uses the browser's built-in speech recognition. If your browser does not provide it, you will see "Speech Recognition not supported" instead of the microphone button.
  • Pick the language before you start. In the Language menu choose Hindi. The setting is read when recording starts, so if you change it while recording, stop and start again.
  • Click Start speaking. The first time, the browser asks for microphone permission. Click Allow.
  • Watch for "Listening…". The text box gets a red border and a red Listening indicator.
  • Speak a phrase, then pause briefly. Recognised text is added only when a phrase is finished, so you may not see words appear while you are still mid-sentence.
  • Click Stop recording when you are done.
  • Edit in the box. The text area is editable, so you can fix words, add punctuation such as the Hindi full stop (।), or type extra lines.
  • Copy or download. Copy puts the text on your clipboard. The ↓ button saves it as transcript.txt. The footer shows word and character counts.
  • What languages can you choose?

The Language menu includes English (US), English (India), Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Spanish, French, German, Arabic and Japanese. For Hindi, Marathi and other Indian languages, the browser normally returns text in the language's own script, so Hindi appears in Devanagari, ready to paste into a document, WhatsApp message or form.

    Tips for better accuracy

    • Use a headset or earphones with a microphone. A mic close to your mouth picks up your voice instead of room echo and fan noise.
    • Speak at a normal pace. Very fast speech runs words together; very slow speech with long gaps can split a sentence into fragments.
    • Say one sentence at a time. Pause between sentences so each one is finalised and added cleanly.
    • Pronounce names and English words clearly. Proper nouns are the most common errors. Fix them afterwards in the text box.
    • Reduce background noise. TV, traffic and other voices are picked up and can be transcribed as words.
    • Check numbers. Spoken numbers may come out as digits or as words. Decide which you want and correct them in one pass at the end.

    Hindi, English or Hinglish?

Many people mix Hindi and English in one sentence. Recognition works best when the language setting matches most of what you say:

    • If you mostly speak Hindi with a few English words, choose Hindi. English words may come out in Devanagari spelling, which you can correct.
    • If you mostly speak English with an Indian accent, choose English (India) rather than English (US).
    • If you want Hindi written in Roman letters (for example "aap kaise hain"), speech recognition will not do that directly. Dictate in Hindi and then use a transliteration tool, or dictate in English (India) and edit.

If it stops listening or types nothing

    • It stops after a pause. The browser may end the session after silence. The red border disappears and the button returns to Start speaking. Click it again to continue; new text is added after what is already in the box.
    • Nothing is typed. Check that the right microphone is selected in your system settings and that the page has microphone permission (click the icon to the left of the address bar).
    • Words come out in the wrong language. Stop recording, check the Language menu says Hindi, and start again.
    • It does not work offline. See the privacy note below.

    Privacy: where your voice goes

Browser speech recognition is not processed by Lazyblink. According to MDN's Web Speech API documentation, by default "your audio is sent to a web service for recognition processing, so it won't work offline". So:

    • You need an internet connection.
    • Avoid dictating passwords, bank details or other sensitive information.
    • The text you see stays in the page until you clear it or close the tab. The tool does not save your transcript; copy or download it before closing.

Good uses for Hindi voice typing

    • Drafting WhatsApp messages, emails or social posts in Hindi without a Hindi keyboard.
    • Writing first drafts of essays, letters or applications, then polishing them by hand.
    • Taking quick notes during a call or while reading a book aloud.
    • Helping people who are more comfortable speaking Hindi than typing it.

If you already have Hindi text in a photo or scanned page rather than speech, use Image to Text instead; see How to Extract Hindi Text From an Image. To hear Hindi text read aloud, try Text to Speech.

    Quick checklist

    • Chrome or Edge, microphone allowed.
    • Language set to Hindi before you click Start speaking.
    • Short phrases, small pauses, quiet room.
    • Stop, edit, then Copy or download.

    Frequently asked questions

How can I type in Hindi by speaking?

Open a browser speech-to-text tool in Chrome or Edge, set the language to Hindi, click Start speaking, allow the microphone and speak in short phrases. The text appears in Devanagari.

Does Hindi speech to text work offline?

Usually not. By default browser speech recognition sends audio to an online recognition service, so you need an internet connection.

Why does voice typing stop by itself?

The browser can end the recognition session after a period of silence. Click Start speaking again; new text is added after the existing text.

Can I get Hindi voice typing in English letters (Hinglish)?

Not directly. Speech recognition in Hindi returns Devanagari. Dictate in Hindi and transliterate afterwards, or dictate in English (India) and edit.
