GPA Calculator Guide: How to Calculate Semester and Cumulative GPA
GPA (Grade Point Average) is used by US universities, UK institutions, and increasingly Indian private universities to summarise academic performance. Understanding the calculation helps you track your standing, plan improvement, and convert between Indian CGPA and the 4.0 scale.
4.0 Scale Grade Conversion
A+ and A = 4.0 grade points, approximately 93-100%. A- = 3.7, approximately 90-92%. B+ = 3.3, approximately 87-89%. B = 3.0, approximately 83-86%. B- = 2.7, approximately 80-82%. C+ = 2.3, approximately 77-79%. C = 2.0, approximately 73-76%. C- = 1.7, approximately 70-72%. D = 1.0, approximately 60-69%. F = 0.0, below 60%.
Note: Some universities award A+ as 4.3 rather than 4.0. Always check your institution's specific scale.
Semester GPA Formula
GPA equals the sum of (grade points times credit hours) divided by total credit hours.
Example: Calculus (4 credits, A, 4.0 points) = 16 quality points. English (3 credits, B+, 3.3 points) = 9.9 quality points. History (3 credits, A-, 3.7 points) = 11.1 quality points. Chemistry (3 credits, B, 3.0 points) = 9.0 quality points. PE (1 credit, A, 4.0 points) = 4.0 quality points.
Total quality points = 50.0. Total credits = 14. Semester GPA = 50.0 divided by 14 = 3.57.
Cumulative GPA Formula
Cumulative GPA uses total quality points and total credits across all semesters.
Example: Semester 1 is 14 credits at 3.57 GPA = 49.98 quality points. Semester 2 is 16 credits at 3.25 GPA = 52.0 quality points. Semester 3 is 15 credits at 3.80 GPA = 57.0 quality points. Total quality points = 158.98. Total credits = 45. Cumulative GPA = 158.98 divided by 45 = 3.53.
GPA Requirements by Goal
Staying enrolled at most US universities: minimum 2.0. Graduation honours (cum laude): 3.5+. Most graduate school programs: 3.0 minimum, 3.5+ competitive. Top programs like Harvard, MIT, Stanford: 3.7+ for competitive admission. Medical school: 3.5+ (3.7+ for competitive programs). Law school top 14: 3.5+ (3.7-3.9 for most competitive). Big Tech companies (Google, Meta, Amazon): 3.0 soft cutoff, 3.5+ preferred. Investment banking: 3.5+ for major firms.
Converting Indian CGPA to US GPA
| Indian CGPA (10-point scale) | Approximate US GPA (4.0 scale) |
|---|---|
| 9.5-10.0 | 4.0 |
| 9.0-9.4 | 3.7-3.9 |
| 8.5-8.9 | 3.5-3.6 |
| 8.0-8.4 | 3.3-3.4 |
| 7.5-7.9 | 3.0-3.2 |
| 7.0-7.4 | 2.7-2.9 |
| 6.5-6.9 | 2.3-2.6 |
Most US universities require official WES (World Education Services) transcript evaluation for Indian applicants — they don't use informal conversion tables for admission decisions.
How to Raise Your GPA
Early semesters have more leverage: a low GPA after semester 1 (16 credits) can be substantially raised by strong subsequent semesters. The same improvement in semester 6 has less impact because more credits are already locked in.
Grade replacement: Some universities allow retaking a course with the new grade replacing the original in GPA calculation. Check your institution's policy carefully.
Course difficulty balance: Strategic course selection — mixing subjects where you excel with required challenging courses — helps maintain GPA while meeting graduation requirements.
Incomplete vs withdrawal: If you are failing a course before the drop deadline, withdrawing (W on transcript, not counted in GPA) is far better than taking an F.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert my Indian CGPA to US GPA?
Most US universities evaluate Indian grades on a holistic basis. A common approximation: CGPA 8.5/10 ≈ 3.5/4.0 GPA. Check the specific university's policy as there is no universal standard.
Can I raise my GPA from 2.5 to 3.0 in one semester?
It depends on how many credit hours you have completed. The fewer total credits completed, the more impact one good semester has. Realistically, raising by 0.1–0.2 per semester is achievable.
